Story: No smoke and mirrors here. Only the freshest in season coffees, purposefully and thoughtfully picked. Fresh Crop is a blend for those who want complexity, consistency and quality in the cup, and we are going with the designations Bright and Balanced. The coffees will change with the seasons, but the flavor profile of bright, fruity and floral attributes will never waver. Fresh Crop Bright will be a blend of the latest Eastern Africans we have in house, focusing on the floral and fruit forward aspects of them.
Our fourth 2017 Guatemalan release is called Ixban, named after a small municipality found slightly farther north than La Liberated and San Pedro Necta. This is a collection of small day lots from small farmers who band together to produce enough coffee to create this small 6-bag microlot. We particularly like the complexity that comes from multiple producers, growing multiple varietals at high elevation. Look for red grape juiciness and peach sweetness married to lime and green apple acidity and finishing with some amazingly aromatic florals.
Buena Vista is our sixth Guatemalan lot of the 2017 season. This past February and March we were lucky enough to spend a day on Finca Buena Vista. The steep hills planted with coffee up past 1800 meters can only be accessed by 4-wheel drive ATV's and the view front the top of the Volcano the farm sits gives a glorious panorama of Antigua City below. This coffee was so sweet throughout the cup with a big tea-like backbone. This coffee was another one of our highest lots cupped at origin.
The profile on this coffee falls into the classic Yirgacheffe taste that we know and love. Upon sipping you are greeted with clean sweet fruit that tastes of raspberries and white peach. The middle of the cup is interlaced with black tea and bergamot that is reminiscent of a fine cup of earl grey tea. Its bright and cheery and the sparkling acidity and floral components linger from sip to sip.
Our second 2017 fresh crop Guatemala microlot comes from the multiple award-winning classic estate, Finca Retana. It grows it's coffee separated by varietal, some of the most delicious being the red and yellow bourbon. When we visited the estate this spring, harvest was in full swing and we were able to walk through the shaded shrub rows tasting and comparing coffee cherries from each variety. The yellow bourbon cherries were so much sweeter than the others, we could hardly believe it. We are privileged to bring you this 100% yellow bourbon microlot from producer Fernando Cofiño and being milled through Zelcafe. Retana is a perennial Cup of Excellence winner!
In late January 2017, while traveling upcountry in Nyeri County we stopped in at the Central Kenya Coffee Mill to see if any standout lots were passing through the mill before they made it to marketing agents in Nairobi. I distinctly remember the third cup on the cupping table stopped me dead in my tracks. Just the aroma alone smelled like a candy factory churning out sweet fruit confections. As I reached my spoon back from the cup of coffee an assortment of fruits and florals sprayed across my tongue that I've truly never experienced in my life. This cup was clearly a different animal. Its the kind of cup that coffee buyers such as ourselves spend a decade or lifetime in search of. With great joy I am pleased to offer this coffee to you and hope that you'll share in the same childlike amazement of the quality of this cup and fruit forward intensity like few other cups on this earth.
Hey you! Yeah you. You look a little nervous, jittery, strung out. Let me introduce you to a little friend of mine. Her name is Lekempte. She's all that flavor, mystery and intrigue that you looked for in your full strength wild-child coffees. But she still makes sure you get a good night of sleep at the end of the day. She just may seduce you with her cocoa powder body, her blackberry and cane sugar sweetness and her plum and lime juiciness. She's the kind of coffee that you'd like to bring home to your mother. We think she's a tall black drink or compact little espresso-shun of love. Brought to you by the fine folks at Swiss Water Process and packaged in Grain Pro for extended enjoyment. We are proud to offer one of the finest decaf programs in the Pacific Northwest... the US....the World!
The Ethiopia Yukro is a perennial favorite. We adore its intense sweetness and dense body thats supported by ripe citrus fruits and hints of lilac florals. Of course it'll perform well as filter and espresso, but with body and sweetness this big espresso shots will be dynamite.
